The other day as I was walking by the bird feeder I saw this russet and gray bird with steaks down its white chest. I quickly snapped a photo and then went looking for my bird book to identify it. I assumed it was a type of sparrow. Indeed it is a song sparrow.
I'm delighted to see some new avian friends. I've debated whether or not I should try other types of bird seed to attract different species. I don't want to lose the ones who faithfully come to the feeder. Do you have any advice to share?
This chipping sparrow was singing quite the tune!

Sweet Nutmeg was back and I told her to strike a pose for me!
A couple of mourning doves were hanging out enjoying some fallen seed. Their 'woo-OO-oo-oo-oo' is such a distinct sound. I haven't found their nest yet, but I will know when I see 2 white eggs.

The doves come to my yard everyday. This week we had a blizzard on Tuesday but on Monday I had a robin taking a bath in the birdbath! Loved your birdies!

ReplyDeleteI've been feeding my birds for over 15 years and eventually they all come as long as you have the black seed in the food. I've been consistant and they have too. Love Nutmegs name!

Having moved to an area with an abundance of 'new to us' birds we have our bird book and binoculars handy at all times. This does not always prevent heated discussion regarding identification but it is a lot of fun.

Beautiful shots of the birds.. lucky you to get them before they flew away! No suggestions for your birdseed question as our bird feeder seems to be mainly for the squirrels! They could care less if I rap on the window to shoo them away.. rather righteous creatures! But I love them anyway!!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love the birds, I sure do. I have two bird feeders and several different birds visit. Visitors also include a wee little chipmunk and I am sure the grey squirrel will arrive any day.

ReplyDeleteWhen I finally have my own yard, I will be attracting birds with every type of food I can get my hands on. I'll add a birdbath or two as well. I think if you space them out some, it will be ok.

ReplyDeleteSo sweet. Your garden looks like a paradise! We've hung some feeders with fat balls in them for the birds from the magnolia tree next to the patio. Its lovely to sit and watch them - they can often appear so tame and sometimes they squabble together like children!
