A Cute Downy

In the spring when I was doing garden clean up I would hear woodpeckers in the empty lot behind us just drumming away on the trees.  I have never seen one come to our bird feeder so I decided to purchase a woodpecker suet feeder just for them.  I filled it with a blend of beef, cracked corn, peanut & nut pieces and black-oil sunflower.

A couple of weeks ago my husband hung it from the larch tree outside our living room window.  A great place for me to keep an eye on things and see who comes to visit!  After about a week I saw a black-capped chickadee enjoying a snack.  I told myself just be patient and let them find it.  Well, this past Saturday I looked out the window and to my surprise there was a cute Downy Woodpecker.  I knew right away it was  male by the small red patch on the back of his head.  I yelled to Michael "Get the camera we have a woodpecker at the feeder!"

He is quite small with a black and white checkered pattern.  Soon a friend came to join him.

I don't think hubby was totally convinced the woodpeckers would use a feeder so I'm glad I proved him wrong ... lol.

Thanks for stopping to visit me.  Happy bird watching!

I've never this, thanks for sharing, we have woodpeckers in our trees and sometimes they do come to the feeder but not often.

Great photos, Donna, and that is a very unique and cool feeder. We used to put out a small suet feeder, one designed for the little square suet cakes, but the raccoons kept knocking it down and eating all of the suet.

how very clever and welcoming for them!

I love woodpeckers! We get them here frequently - they love to tap on metal signs and roof flashing (apparently letting others know it's their territory). I never thought about having a feeder specifically for them. Might have to try it! Have a wonderful day.

Great picture. My husband is not a fan of woodpeckers at all. He says they make a racket so he would never let me do this at all. Besides if we were to do it when we were at our house we would have attracted many other animals, such as bear, to the house. Not a good thing.
